NJ Approves 23 New Charter Schools
The Record
Governor Christie announced today that it has approved 23 new charter schools, increasing the number of charter schools by about one third. This includes some controversial schools included Hebrew immersion school for residents of Englewood and Teaneck and a virtual high school for students in Paterson. The charter schools are public but operate independently of the local school district. The administration additionally announced that they are making changes to the law that allow for charters to be approved faster including same-sex charters. The changes will also allow failing public schools to be turned into charter schools.

American Airlines Pilot Found Dead; Police Investigating

On Friday, in Miami, Florida, American Airlines pilot Russell Christopher Walker was found dead. On Tuesday, January 18, the authorities appealed for the public help. The 50 year old man was found dead by authorities conducting a welfare check in his Pompano Beach home. The statment said Walker had not been heard form for 7 to 10 days before he was found. The Sheriff's homicide department ask that anyone with information about the death report it to them.
Israel Arrests Suspect in Serbenica Massacre

On Tuesday in Jerusalem, Israel, police arrested an immigrant from the former Yogoslavia who is suspected to be involved in the 1995 massacre in Srebrenica. The immigrant, Aleksander Cvetkovic moved to Israel with his Jewish wife and children in 2006, and became a citizen. Last August the Israeli state prosecutor received an extradition request for him from the Bosnian government, and they opened an extradition process after months of examining evidence. The ministry said that the evidence shows grueling details of the massacre of Muslims at Braniewo farm. Approximately, 8,000 Mulsim men and boys were killed in the massacre in Srebrenica in 1995.
