Ridgewood Police Seeking Some Extra Eyes
The Record
Ridgewood is offering benefits for residents who band together to protect the neighborhood. In 2010, the Ridgewood police received 50 reports of burglaries. John Ward, Ridgewood Chief of Police, finds community policing very important. A Newark man held in custody confessed to committing three burglaries in the last month in Ridgewood. These occurrences have encouraged residents to form community watch groups. A neighborhood in the southern part of Ridgewood expressed interest in setting up such a group. Some benefits to forming these groups included an increase in reporting of suspicious activity and a reduction in crime. There are also social benefits such as becoming aquatinted with ones neighbors.
