Police Investigate Suspicious Package at Norther Valley High
The Record
Today at Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest, a suspicious pakage was found. It was brought to the school becuase it was returned through the mail with no indication of the sender The students were relocated to the opposite side of the school and Demerast Police were called in. The police opened the package and the super intendant reported that it was being removed this afternoon. He urged parents not to come to the school. The school's midterm schedules are being changed in response. This is the second recent threat to the school after a threat in December of a school shooting.

Gas Line Pressure Increase cause 9 house Fires in Ohio Village

In the Ohio village of Fairport Harbor, at least nine homes caught on fire today after an increase in gas line pressure. The county Sherif reported that as of 8:40 a.m. gas service was shut off. They initially planned to evacuate about 3,000 people, but it was called of by Major Frank Sarosy, because he felt it would be too chaotic. The residents were asked to turn their gas of f from the outside and remain in their homes. There were no immediate reports of injury.

Iraq Bombs Target Shiite Pilgrims, Killing More than 30

Today in Baghdad, three bombings targeted Shiite pilgrims killed at least 33 people. Just outside Karbala, a suicide car bombing killed at least 20 people and wounded 35 others. Also, at least 13 people were killed after a car bomb exploded in a Karbala bus station that was full of Shiite Pilgrims. A roadside bomb targeting Shiite pilgrems exploded an hour after the bust station bombing which wounded 6. The dead and wounded included many women and children who had gathered in Karbala with hundreds of thousands of Shiite Pilgrams in observance.

NJ Approves 23 New Charter Schools
The Record
Governor Christie announced today that it has approved 23 new charter schools, increasing the number of charter schools by about one third. This includes some controversial schools included Hebrew immersion school for residents of Englewood and Teaneck and a virtual high school for students in Paterson. The charter schools are public but operate independently of the local school district. The administration additionally announced that they are making changes to the law that allow for charters to be approved faster including same-sex charters. The changes will also allow failing public schools to be turned into charter schools.

American Airlines Pilot Found Dead; Police Investigating

On Friday, in Miami, Florida, American Airlines pilot Russell Christopher Walker was found dead. On Tuesday, January 18, the authorities appealed for the public help. The 50 year old man was found dead by authorities conducting a welfare check in his Pompano Beach home. The statment said Walker had not been heard form for 7 to 10 days before he was found. The Sheriff's homicide department ask that anyone with information about the death report it to them.

Israel Arrests Suspect in Serbenica Massacre

On Tuesday in Jerusalem, Israel, police arrested an immigrant from the former Yogoslavia who is suspected to be involved in the 1995 massacre in Srebrenica. The immigrant, Aleksander Cvetkovic moved to Israel with his Jewish wife and children in 2006, and became a citizen. Last August the Israeli state prosecutor received an extradition request for him from the Bosnian government, and they opened an extradition process after months of examining evidence. The ministry said that the evidence shows grueling details of the massacre of Muslims at Braniewo farm. Approximately, 8,000 Mulsim men and boys were killed in the massacre in Srebrenica in 1995.

Ridgewood Police Seeking Some Extra Eyes
The Record
Ridgewood is offering benefits for residents who band together to protect the neighborhood. In 2010, the Ridgewood police received 50 reports of burglaries. John Ward, Ridgewood Chief of Police, finds community policing very important. A Newark man held in custody confessed to committing three burglaries in the last month in Ridgewood. These occurrences have encouraged residents to form community watch groups. A neighborhood in the southern part of Ridgewood expressed interest in setting up such a group. Some benefits to forming these groups included an increase in reporting of suspicious activity and a reduction in crime. There are also social benefits such as becoming aquatinted with ones neighbors.

Bookended by tragedy, a too-short life leaves a void

In Tuscon, Arizona, Christina Green, a 9-year-old girl who was born on Septermber 11, 2001 died in shoots in Arizona on Saturday. She was attending the event hosted by Rep.Gabrielle Gliffords because she had been recently elected for student council. Christine had been featured in a book called "Faces of Hope: Babies Born on 9/11" published in 2002. Families left flowers and a note at Mesa Verde Elementary school, where the girl had attened to commemorate her death.

Reports: Death Toll Rises to 77 in Iran Plane Crash

Today new agencies in Tehran, Iran reported the death tole from a plane crash in Northwestern Iran has risen to 77. 27 others were injured in the crash. The crash happened in a snowy and mountainous part of the country. Bad weather forced the plane to give up its first attempt to land. On the second attempt the air-traffic controllers lost contact with the plane.

After snow, NYC tackles 'great wall of trash'

After last week's blizzard, New York City is first starting to pick up garbage. Trash collection was suspended because crews were struggling to plow the streets. Only half the usual amount of garbage collection will be deployed since the sanitation department is still getting rid of the snow. The blizzard had piled 20 inches of snow on New York City, and trash has been more than 6 feet deep in some spots. Mayor Bloomberg and other officials were criticized for the slow response to the snow storm. Bloomberg said today that the next step he will take is to figure out what went wrong with the cleanup of the storm.

Human remains those of missing Georgia woman

Today it was reported that bones found in Georgia are the remains of Krisit Cornwll, who had went missing nearly a year and a half ago. The bones were identified after testing the bones and using Cornwell's old dental record. 38-year-old Cornwell was last seen on August 11,2009 walking on a road in northern Georgia. Cornwell's remains were found by a passerby in wooded area, approximately 9 miles from where she was left.

Strong Earthquake strikes central Chile

On Sunday, January 2, an earthquake hit the central coastal area of Chile. The earthquake measured in with a magnitude of 7.1. The quake struck at 5:20 p.m. and could be felt all the way in Santiago, which is about 370 miles north of where the quake occurred. Both the U.S. Geological Survey and the CNN Chile reported no immediate damage or injuries. This past February hundreds died in earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 that struck in Conception, 100 miles North of the recent earthquake.
